You are not telling with which version you have these problems. However, from 
the file I guess that it is KWord 1.1.x.

I have tested with KWord 1.2 and I cannot reproduce your first problem 
(replacement). I suppose that it has been fixed in the meantime.

As for your second problem (preview/printing), it seems to be the classical 
problem that KWord 1.1.x is not WYSIWYG.

So in short: please try KOffice 1.2!
