Hi,

Ah yes, I had this problem also. You should at least check that your PATH only 
has the path to your compiled kde installation bin directory and not the path 
to your old/regular kde installation. Also KDEDIR and QTDIR should point to 
the correct paths. I use a special user for development and put this in my 
.bashrc:

export PATH=/opt/kdecvs/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin: \ 
/bin:/usr/games:/opt/gnome/bin:/usr/lib/java/bin

export QTDIR=/home/kdecvs/src/kdecvs/qt-copy/
export KDEDIR=/opt/kdecvs/
export KDEHOME=~/.kdecvs

And in .xinitrc I put this at the end:

exec /opt/kdecvs/bin/startkde

Of course you have to disable a line like this:

#exec $WINDOWMANAGER
