depends on your distro. I just start mine at the end of rc.M (BSD style init)

for RH and similar System V init try removing the S**gdm in /etc/init.d/rc5.d 
directory and replacing with S**kdm.

or atleast something to that affect.  Someone with a RH/Mand machine will be 
able to tell you better.
