I am running KDE3 on RH 7.2 and on the kde site, they recomend you remove your 
old kde before installing KDE3.

so here's what I would do.

1. create a folder for ALL of the kde3 rpms
2. put all the kde rpms in this folder
3. open a xterm and su to root
4. navigate to the directory where you put the kde3 rpm's
5. follow the instructions on the link above to remove your old KDE
6. issue the command: rpm -Uvh *.rpm
7. log out and back in.

this is *ONLY* if you just want KDE3 on your system and not KDE2 also.
