Hi!

I posted this on Konqueror-devel, but the list is not very frequented, so I
repost it here, because I think it is important:

Currently, Konqueror sends the usual version string, for example 2.2.2 or
3.0.0.

If you look at browser statistics (I've found
http://www.zyn.de/htstats/usage_200204.html#TOPAGENTS on the web as an
example) you see that several Konqueror versions are in the statistics on
lower ranks.

Because most sites monitor only the first 15 or 10 browsers, Konqueror doesn't
even show up in most statistics, and with KDE .x versions coming out every
couple of months will never have a chance to get in. Also, with KDE becoming
more mature, people will upgrade less often, which will make it even harder
for a single Konqueror-version to enter the top-10.

If Konqueror would only send the major version number ("Konqueror 3" instead
of "Konqueror 3.x.y") I think it will get into a lot more browser stats and
it will be more likely that the webmaster tests the site against Konqueror. I
think it will also be more likely for Konqueror to get out of the
"others"-category of the big statistics-sites like
http://www.upsdell.com/BrowserNews/stat.htm
If you currently write to a webmaster about a problem on the site, the
webmaster will most likely respond (if at all) "never heard of Konqueror" -
But if Konqueror makes it into the top-10, the webmaster at least has heard
of it and knows that it exists and will be more open to complaints, even if
he doesn't have a Unix-box to run it himself.

And this would benefit all users of Konqueror.

Thanks for listening,

Roland
