You need to make your prompt output <ESC>]31$PWD\G
in zsh, this does it: precmd() { print -nP "%{^[]31;%~^G%}" } 
^[ and ^G are litereally entered <ESC> and <BEL> characters resp (it's a 
snippet from my ~/.zshrc).
In bash, sth. like export PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne "\033]31;$PWD\007"' should 
do. Note: didn't try this, as I don't use bash.
