I have to do this when debugging pyQT problems because gdb dosent always set 
up the env correctly for me.  It also in my opinion is more convenent and 
safer when doing things that involve OpenGL.  DRI and gdb dont always play 
nice for some reason. 

Another very useful option I like is 
	gdb <appname> core
This will have gdb scan the corefile and allow you to generate a backtrace.  
I have used this sometimes when I have "random" crashes.  I keep about 9 or 
10 corefiles arround and use a simple shell script to give me a list of 
backtraces.  I have found two bugs in KWeather that way
