Linux (or any other computer) CD players come in two flavours
1) Those that use the analogue output of the CD read on the sound card "CD 
in" channel (IIRC cdplay is in that class) -- mostly older applications.
2) Those that rip the CD and output via the PCM interface to the soundcard 
(alsaplayer does that)

I'm not sure what kscd does, but it might be worth seeing if alsaplayer will 
play the CD (you don't actually need to have ALSA to use alsaplayer BTW).
