People who like the 70's will probably disagree with you.

Personally I don't like the icon either. 
From the usability pov I would replace it at once by the icon which has been 
used for korn. 
PR-wise this would be a bad idea though. The current KMail-icon is very 
original. Once you see it you know: "Ah - this icon will start KMail". 
clicking on yet another postbox-icon would probably only start yet another 
insignificant mailer. 
Personally I played around with the idea of using the @-symbols clipped around 
an envelope for quite some time. Still no results to see yet though.
