Why not set the time of 5 seconds to a configurable value???
Microsoft set this (for Windows, not Linux!) to 20 seconds, anyway, and
made it configurable.

Logout kills all applications if they are not finished with closing
themselves=20
within 5 seconds.
We had the same problem with KMail.
