You need libstdc++-devel, not just libstdc++. v2.96 is ok.

I have  libstdc++-devel installed. 

[john@ted junk]$ rpm -q libstdc++-devel
libstdc++-devel-2.96-81
[john@ted junk]$ rpm -q libstdc++
libstdc++-2.96-81
[john@ted junk]$

and 

[john@ted junk]$ rpm -q gcc
gcc-2.95.3-29
[john@ted junk]$ rpm -q gcc-c++
gcc-c++-2.95.3-29
[john@ted junk]$

I was wondering if the different compiler versions made a difference
