There is a problem with the way KDE handles installation directories,
making it a bad fit for student labs. It only handle two config
directories $prefix and $HOME/.kde/, and only one install directory
$prefix.

I want to install the KDE base system in one directory tree, the KDE
addons in a different directory, and allow the students to install
their own addons in their home directory. As far as I know, this is
impossible with the current KDE libraries. Example:

  KDE base systen /usr/
  KDE extras (site spesific)	/store/opt/kde/
  KDE extras (user spesific)	$HOME/kde/

The menu and config entires must be read from all directories. How do
I do this with KDE?
