Was: Kalternatives 0.2 Message-Id: X-MARC-Message: https://marc.info/?l=kde-debian&m=107288641524749 Hi, Juanjo! > http://www.escomposlinux.org/fer_y_juanjo/archivos/kalternatives_0.2-1_all.deb The screenshots look nice, but the deb doesn't seem to be available. Yesterday I had a look at currently available administration tools for kde (eg. kcron, ...) and the system configuration tools on several other platforms (windows 2000, several linux distributions, ...). The good: I found that there already are a lot of good tools, some of which I had never heard of before. :-) The bad: There are still some important tools missing. Some stuff like software installation is already getting developed. For some other important areas I have not yet heard of any efforts. Many of the administration tools I looked at are separate applications. I'm not sure if it's feasible, or even a good idea to integrate these tools into the Control Center. While I think that CC has it's usability problems, I think that these can be solved. Currently the user has to look in at least two places to find a way to complete some configuration task: Control Center (e.g. "File Sharing") and System (e.g. "Cron", but this menu also contains "CD Burning"?) What exactly is supposed to be the difference between "Control Center" and "System"? AFAIK SuSE has integrated it's administration tools into the Control Center. I think it is a good idea to have all options in one place. What do the people on this mailing list think about this, especially since at least some configuration tools will be developed here. Separate Application or Control Center module? Scripting languages would be great to develop configuration tools, but I'm not sure that you can use PerlQT to create CC modules and the Python bindings were supposed to support creating CC modules, but some problems with multiple concurrently running modules emerged. So as far as I can see, Control Center modules have to be developed with C++, with raises the bar for contributions considerably. bye, Paul. _______________________________________________ kde-debian mailing list kde-debian@kde.org https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kde-debian
