I think the threaded OSS driver which Matthias Welwarsky has posted to the
aRts list might fix it for you

I hope to integrate that one - for legacy broken bad soundcard support - into
KDE3 soon, as soon as the remaining issues with the patch are sorted out.

The only card I can recommend is one with ES1371 chip, because I am using that
myself, and this means, that it will always work, but I am quite sure it has
no front/rear stuff.
