This happened like this:
* wrote the mail in KMail
* suddenly (maybe I clicked a little here and there in the composer window), 
the mouse ceased to work (like a grab, pointer moved, but clicks didn't yield 
any result)
* Tried Ctrl-Return (Send mail), KMail hung
* killed KMail - got the pointer back after a Meta-Return (execute command, 
sometimes helps to kill grabs :)
* started KMail again, which opened dead.letter as expected
* Sent it
obvisouly the previous send didn't really fail...
