Say... Isn't the full mixer the advanced widget that would fix very well 
behind a middle click? After all the full mixer is in the context menu as 
well. And it frees the left button for the -indeed better- master only volume.

So: Left - Master volume, Middle - Full mixer, Right - Context menu
