Hi,
I guess the translators would be interested in that one, too ...

Hi
It was once discussed that having some sort of "category" field in the
.desktop would help a lot. The goal is to have menu entries that look somehow
like that:
kmail (mail client)
knode (news client)
kwrite (advanced editor)
konqueror (web browser)
noatun (mp3 player)
kmp3 (mp3 player)
etc
Currently, we have in the KMenu either the original name of the app or a name
that describes its function : Advanced Editor, ...
-> It confuses the geek-user because it takes time to figure that 'advanced
editor' is kwrite.
-> It can confuse the basic user because he doesn't see the difference
between 'advanced editor' and 'text editor'.
-> Moreover, it doesn't inform the basic user of the name of the tool he is
using. This is not good.
The was not done for 2.1 but I really wish we do that for 2.2 . Even if it
doesn't get standardize yet in the .desktop this would make the menu a lot
easier to understand. Not everyone knows that konqueror is a web browser,
noatun a music player, etc.
If you are not convinced it is necessary, I suggest we run a poll on
dot.kde.org to see what people think. And I am sure all users will vote for
such a change.
The details of implementation are not that important:
- should we have standardize category ? Yes it would be better for
consistency.
- should we write "kmail (mail client)" or "mail client: kmail" ? I prefer
the first expression but making it configurable should be hard.
regards,
Philippe
