Ok, I've had a _long_ chat about this last night on #kde. It looks like it is
technically possible indeed, but that it might not be worth the effort.

How valuable is binary compatibility for us during the transition from one
major version to another? This compatibility layer will slow existing
pre-compiled apps down, but will not (or at least is not supposed to) affect
recompiled sources in any way.

Futhermore, to prevent being stuck with old API's till the end of days it
should be used solely for maintaining BINARY compatibility and not SOURCE
compatibility.

Thus, the question is simple: do we want bc if it is possible and has no
impact on future source code, even if it slows down apps that use it and
takes a serious amount of effort to develop initially (and also some effort
to keep up-to-date, though that should be doable and not too hard) ?

Please let me know (off the list is fine).

TIA,

Martijn
