Nothing, they are still the same, and no related things changed. What

This look strange.  I guess, you have messed with $CDPATH, as the above
"/home/damware/src/kde/kdebase/bnewgcc/conftestdir" seems to be the ouput
of the "cd conftestdir" in the check, and such output is produced by "cd"
only, if $CDPATH includes the current directory (in some "broken" shells).  
Really annoying behaviour.  We might reset CDPATH in the beginning of
configure, shall I?

> libraries /usr/X11/lib, headers .

This looks OK, at least, if you have /usr/include/X11.
