I have just investigated a bit and I found out, that when I restart the computer completely ( i.e. shutdown and restart ), the KDE2 starts correctly. However after simple logout and login again, I get the grey screen. I don't know if this helps a bit, but at least I will not cleanup / delete my sources again, because now I know, that it was not a source of the problem.
