Why use link() if it's not necessary and rename() does a similar
thing. There are filesystems out there, which have problems with hard
links (AFS used to have some), and which nevertheless are used as home
dirs. Even for NFS a stat() is needed to be sure, if link() really was
sucessfull, even if it returned no error. Hard links suck, so to say.
