This will be implemented, even good old kpanel had this auto-hide feature. 
The animations will of course be configurable (enabled/disabled and speed).

The panel looks somewhat strange without the hide buttons. Thats perhaps 
because I'm used to have them from kpanel. By the way, you can disable them 
now. Have a look at kcmkicker.
