BSD 4.3 doesn't know it - BSD 4.4 says 
"The functions setenv() and unsetenv() appeared in Version 7 AT&T UNIX.
 The putenv() function appeared in 4.3BSD-Reno."

BTW: RH 5.0 doesn't know it either - 5.2 says what you said,
so the man page author definitly mixed things. And Solaris (to
answer your question) knows about putenv only.

and shouldn't be missing in any KDE developer's bookmark collection.
Just enable 4.3BSD Reno and if there doesn't appear a man page - we
don't
want it - or have a fake ;)
