If you're using Linux, what do you get in the 'VmData' field
of /proc/<pid of X>/status ?

I get a massive 19856 kB in VmSize, but only (?) 4740 in VmData,
which is a more realistic figure (if still stupidly large, considering
I'm only running a couple of rxvt's).
