Yup a weird QLayout bug caused the status bar problem too. (removeWidget in 
qabstractlayout.cpp was behaving oddly)

Okay, so removing that delete statement isn't a viable workaround.

Sure. The current snapshot of QT is something of a lemon in my opinion. (As 
well as this problem I'm experiencing the occasional spontaneous crash in 
KMail) I'm hoping a new snapshot comes out soonish.
