I just had a look at the Qt 1.4 and the gnome (xmms) filedialogs.

gnome:
-If you select a file using the mouse, the filename without path appears in
the editline
-if you select more than one file, only the last selected file appears in the
editline

Qt 1.4:
-mouse-selected files don't appear in the editline ("add existing file" in
kdevelop)

My suggestion:
only show the filenames and automatically add the current directory of kfd if
the filename isn't given as an absolut path/url. Divide the filenames by spaces,
for filenames containing spaces use "..."

Is this the same as the mentioned "...separate the directory from the files..."
