This sounds a lot like the scrollable toolbar. It defeats the whole 
purpose of "easy to access buttons". If you don't have room for more 
buttons a sort of submenu is the way to go IMO. It is much easier to 
access than scrollable buttons. (historical note: CDE used this as well)
