Since you all talk about SHIFT, CTRL and ALT, "windows key" etc:
I have seen a number of keyboards recently that also have some extra buttons
marked such as "www", "volume" "eject"  etc. Can X detect these keys? Have 
anyone tried to run xev with this kind of keyboard? What happens?
