But wait. If I comment out the background manager, it's still 12 MB !? How's that possible? Is there a way to profile this? X gets very large indeed, if you unlimit the pixmap cache and have many different desktops that cannot be tiled. The default of 2Mb cache should prevent this, though. Otherwise it's a bug.
