Try this:

Drag toolbar out of the main window.
Drag it back over the window but don't let it swallow again.
Drag it back out of the main window. -> Uhps, it's gone!?!
Switch desktops. Move curser over main window. Yippih! It's back
again.

BTW, probably only happens in 'focus follow mouse mode'.
