Hi all,

This evening I have been investigating our options surrounding Mailman 2
upgrade paths as part of an evaluation to replace our current primary mail
server (Letterbox) which runs Ubuntu 20.04 with a newer system running
22.04.

One of the consequences of this upgrade will be that we will be forced to
migrate off Mailman 2 as it is no longer available and distributed in
Ubuntu 22.04.

The most likely candidate for this is naturally Mailman 3 (an instance of
which can be found at
https://mail.python.org/archives/list/python-dev@python.org/)

It appears to be a substantial improvement in all regards over Mailman 2,
and therefore I intend to upgrade to that at this stage.

Important considerations to note as part of this:
- Existing list moderator and administrator passwords will cease to work,
as Mailman 3 uses individual accounts to manage this
- Mailman 3 uses a completely different URL format, so existing list
archive links will likely be broken. It may be possible to retain static
copies of the existing Pipermail archives to mitigate the impact of this
but they won't be updated any further following the upgrade.

Further information will be announced closer to the time.

Thanks,
Ben
