This is on all computers that I use (three). Without this issue I'd be in favor of leaving them on, but yeah, let the specialists decide. I wouldn't bother with a configuration option because nobody will find it (except maybe distributors) - how do you know that something is there if it doesn't tell you so. And you will have to fix the spurious notifications if there is a configuration option. Or maybe fixing them is a good idea anyway :)
