There is a protocol for this:
http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/playground/base/strigiplasmoid/src/jstream/
It is more powerful than tar:/ and zip:/ because it can handle emails,
rpm, ar, cpio and deb archives. In addition, it can recursively open
archives.
