for writable removable devices, i'm not so sure about that. for non-dynamic 
partitions, i agree. but when i put in a key or a usb drive, this information 
is pretty useful and important immediately.

this is especially true in a save dialog, where a properties dialog is clumsy 
to get to and you really need to know an aproximation of how much space is 
left.

what i would also recommend is a tooltip on mouse-over with actual numbers.

as for polling and keeping it syncronized with dolphin, that sounds like a job 
for a sharable class that just monitors these things.
