I guess that was a bit over the top from me anyway, especially seeing
that the current implementation is needed on some platforms.

I wanted to tackle this today, but didn't get around to it. I'll try to
do a bit digging tomorrow, especially checking what the assert tries to
check. As I already offered to Michael I can easily help either of you
to get "multimedia" keypresses reported by X11 for any of the keys you
actually have on your keyboards if that helps.
