These are the *minimum* widths of current find/replace dialog in Kate, in
English and German, with the 79-characters text line above for comparison:

In KWrite it can be shrinked further, at the cost of cutting short the
labels on buttons and combobox items. For the German screenshot, when one
adds the left-side document listing of reasonable width, Kate occupies
almost full screen width.

Now, is it only me who finds this unbearable? I'm used to having my editor
window fitted at 80-column width, possibly watching for "peripheral" events,
in the windows behind the editor.

If by any chance this is a problem that should be solved, I've been trying
out layouts, but couldn't come with anything better than this:

I couldn't find a way to avoid three rows per find/replace group, if low
width is to be maintained; had to trade height for width. The shot above is
set to 80-column width, and there is still some room to accommodate longer
labels without expanding it.
