I've been playing with it and it holds up nicely, but performance
should be better.
I was wondering if we can avoid repaints by letting the update
function signal if anything has changed since the last call.

E.g. if the widget is a QLabel and the style and the text are the same
as the last time, there is no need to repaint.
This requires a change in the API.
