Sometimes I wish we had more old-timers...
We already did one KDE release with the close button on the left (KDE-2.something I think)
and we were indeed the laughing stock.... not only from reviews, but also from
previous users who couldn't understand why they had to change their habits while
still using the -same- desktop environment. Changing something this fundamental
by default doesn't make sense. The users who -want- to change it, can do it though.

And no, maximize isn't a more used button than close. For one window you can only
close once indeed, but that's flawed logic: you might not maximize a window at all.
So over time if you use the close button on 90% of your windows and maximize on 
5% of your windows, then the close button is indeed the more commonly used one
(and it certainly is for me and for most people I see working with computers). 
I'm not against separating them a bit more, but I am definitely against close being
on the left by default - and that's not just me speaking, it's the KDE-2.x (*) close-on-left
fiasco speaking.

(*) for one value of x, not for all values of x. We reverted to close-on-right pretty quickly.
