Right, and HAL doesn't have better information for the other cases as yet - 
I've been through the git20071017 sources we have in SUSE Factory and the v4l 
support there is only a skeleton.  All you can find out from it is that a 
device is a v4l device and its device path, so I took webcam as the most 
common case.  Applications that need to care can then use v4l itself.
