rather than using tabs (which are ugly and take up more vertical space, which
is more in demand than horizontal these days), what do you think about
putting an icon that lets one switch to these other panels at the top between
the overview button and the search label?

To add to this, maybe these icons can be based on a smarter idea than the distinction between normal and advanced - something like usersettings and systemsettings?
