I don't think a service would be a good idea. I mean, e.g. on Linux /proc/ *is* already the centralized service. The suggestion from Scott, to move this into a desktop-neutral library sounds really good. If really required, maybe it could even link to QtCore, now that it has been split and is GPL'd.
