I agree.  I am using the icons all the time to find the correct menu item 
fast. I even assign own symbols to menu items that I need often.

And if you would start to remove the icons in the menus, you can continue with 
toolbars, the K-Menu menu, Icon/Text in the taskbar, Icon/Text in the Window 
decoration, Favicons (they show up together with the page name), and so on 
and so on.

This said, I am 100% agaist removing icons from the menus.
