Uh, Gentoo emerge scripts (the .ebuild files) are written in bash, not 
python...

Don't worry, I find them hard to decipher sometimes as well. ;)

Well yeah, that's half of the idea, it's not *just* about the horrible 
performance, it actually has to be better too.
