"need" is a strong word, as we've done just fine up to now. it would be _nice_

then we'd probably need to drop support for a lot more than just gcc 2.95 =)
IMO, what it comes down to is usage. we aren't writing software for compilers
to use, we're writing software for users (including our own selves) to use.
as 2.95 usage drops away and there are no or very few users that are using
2.95 (probably because they are stuck doing so), then there's no reason to
support 2.95 ... as Dirk noted, this will most likely happen quite
organically.
until that time, i'd rather people be able to run KDE on their machines than
for us to be able to use some of the more advanced C++ features.
