FWIW, running it as normal->root on my setup works fine. I don't think it's 
KCM related(e.g, related to the root loading). When looking at Martin's 
output it's not difficult to find things which looks suspicious:

kio (KIOConnection): ERROR: Header read failed, errno=104
kio (KIOConnection): ERROR: Header has invalid size (-1)
kioslave: ####### CRASH ###### protocol = fonts pid = 26852 signal = 11
