I think I don't agree here - it's the same with xmms-plugins for example.  My 
distributions always offered a lot of extra xmms stuff which normally shows 
up in xmms' (plugin) configuration dialogs only.

I think having a nice GUI for managing extensions would be fine, people won't 
expect everything they install to be "active" more than in "it shows up in 
the extension manager".  (To stress the point even more: It's the same with 
installed programs.  People tend to have hundreds/thousands of programs 
installed with modern Linux distributions, but they don't expect all of them 
to *run* by default or to have GUI elements on their screen, except in the 
program start menu, which corresponds to the extension manager.)
