Indeed. Some this comes from a .la ..... yay, found it - it was the 
new kdebase/kdmlib which lacked a $(all_libraries). 
Apologies to Szombathelyi - this was indeed completely unrelated to
-as-needed.

(I got the kdeui problem due to -as-needed though... I really think -as-needed
should only be enabled by packagers)
