Come on, let's be realistic here. If KDE turned out to have a better sound 
framework on Linux than on Solaris, it wouldn't be a very serious problem. 
KDE is already taking advantages of some X11 extensions when they are 
available, why couldn't it do the same with sound ?

Right, like doing *that* would get us a larger market share :-).
