- more packages mean more administrative information; the package
  manager's memory consumption and cpu power requirements grow. and dpkg
  with its plain text control files is especially slow.
- many packages are always a problem if you cannot resort to automatic
  dependency tracking & downloading - for example when you want to
  install a single up-to-date program on an off-line machine.
