Here, we have to think short term while we can still=20 preserve projects like KOffice to be developed _over time_ to become a spee= dy=20 and functional replacement of OpenOffice. Until then things like KOffice ar= e=20 _research_ projects, alternatives to test our technologies like Kparts.=20 The keyword is: create mindshare by code that KDE can integrate: =2D OpenOffice.org =2D Mozilla =2D GTK/ other toolkits based applications into KDE as seamless as possible. We cannot deny reality the right to dicta= te=20 us that sometimes we have to do things that we do not always like to do. To= =20 cite Michael Gorbatchev: He who comes late gets punished by life. It should= =20 be our way to realize that people tend to think of us as the=20 everything-has-to-be-KDE-or-we-won't-use-it crowd and that we have to do a= =20 good job right now to make sure this impression gets corrected and we are t= he=20 driving factor with regard to uniting both our goal to provide a HIG based,= =20 easy to use desktop with a bunch of useful apps that is _at the same time_= =20 *the* desktop that is able to run and integrate any application out there. One way to do that is to make those apps use our filedialog and printdialog= =20 (printing does work in most cases, filedialog is a research project people= =20 should look at and maybe make proposals how to change gtk to call the kde=20 file dialog, patches welcome for demo. Alex Neundorf is working on the OOo/gtk side, so please contact him if you= =20 want to be of help, he really needs hands helping him with this particular= =20 project. The other way is to check out the cool things that are happening at=20 freedesktop.org which is in particular the organization that will support u= s=20 with any integrative work, may it be themes, styles, settings and new=20 features in X.=20 Ralf =2D-=20 We're not a company, we just produce better code at less costs. =2D------------------------------------------------------------------- Ralf Nolden nolden@kde.org The K Desktop Environment The KDevelop Project http://www.kde.org http://www.kdevelop.org --Boundary-02=_9aM4/kLmbQ+0uqP Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Description: signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.3 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQA/4Ma9u0nKi+w1Ky8RAi7CAJ9USX6O/zSZodk52r/XUB58wau/UACfWgDa +4nO9A2BWbm/AHatlWHLGn8= =Bb4p -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --Boundary-02=_9aM4/kLmbQ+0uqP--
